We all know just how magical the anti-ageing powers of retinol are, but just how quick are they? Are they as quick acting as an actual magic trick? Obviously not, but just how long DOES it take to see results with retinol?
When will the promised glow emerge? Just how long until fine lines evaporate before our eyes? How long does it take to see results with retinol before we throw in the towel?!
It’s a weird thing but in some areas of my life I could wait forever, but in others….. forget it. Right now, I’ve just started a 12-week lead time for a new sofa we’ve just ordered, and honestly, it’s going to be the longest 12 weeks of my life.
It’s just as well I don’t have a choice because I’m quite sure if given the option, I would end up paying to have it delivered tomorrow. It would be an absolute waste of money but I just CANNOT wait!
Skincare is a bit like getting a new sofa – sort of! Sadly we just have to wait to get the results with both of them.
The good news is that you can follow starting retinol with a rough timeline. I say “rough” because it is very different for everyone depending on so many things such as your skin type, age and the purpose behind using retinol.
I’ll go through this timeline with you in this post, starting with a little reminder of what retinol is and how it benefits us.
Before you read any further, you’ve got to promise me you’ll keep in mind this is not “one size fits all” and not to think it’s not working for you if you don’t match up to this…..ok?!
If you’ve been wondering how long does it take to see results with retinol (and does retinol work)…….then read on.

What is Retinol?
The good news is retinol works! Retinol and retinoids, a category of chemical compounds derived from vitamin A, include various forms such as retinol, retinoic acid (tretinoin), and retinaldehyde.
The versatility of these skincare products extends to both medical and skincare applications due to their remarkable capacity to impact cell growth and overall skin health.
In the medical field, retinoids play a crucial role in treating diverse conditions like acne, psoriasis, and certain types of cancer.
Simultaneously, in dermatology and skincare, retinoids for skin have gained widespread acclaim for their effectiveness in addressing various skin concerns and enhancing overall skin appearance.
The key to the efficacy of retinol and retinoids lies in their active ingredient, retinoic acid. This ingredient acts as a catalyst for cell turnover. Retinol has the ability to influence the behaviour of our skin cells, encouraging them to function in a healthier and more balanced manner.
Over-the-counter (OTC) retinol necessitates some changes to convert into retinoic acid, prescription-strength retinoids are already in the converted state, enabling them to work faster and more effectively.

What are the Benefits of Retinol?
Here’s a quick rundown of the benefits of your retinol serum. We need to know, after all, what the results will be before knowing how long it will take to get them!!
We’ll kick these retinol benefits off with our favourite wrinkles!
Preserve and Create Collagen
The retinol anti aging magic occurs due to them being adept at maintaining optimal collagen levels, a key factor in preserving the firmness and elasticity of our skin. As we age, natural collagen production diminishes, but there are effective strategies to decelerate this process.
The first approach involves safeguarding existing collagen and impeding further breakdown, while the second entails stimulating the skin to generate additional collagen. This is where the remarkable efficacy of retinoids becomes evident.
In the first aspect, retinols play a dual role. They inhibit the production of collagenase, an enzyme responsible for breaking down collagen, ensuring the protection of our valuable collagen reserves. Simultaneously, retinols excel at prompting increased production of this vital protein.
Skin Brightening
Retinols contribute to skin lightening through targeted actions on two crucial aspects of skin pigmentation. Firstly, they impede the clumping of melanin in the basal cells, the primary producers of skin pigment.
By curbing the excessive accumulation of melanin, retinols play a role in diminishing the appearance of dark spots, sunspots, and various forms of hyperpigmentation.
Additionally, retinols speed up the turnover of skin cells, a process commonly referred to as exfoliation. This accelerated renewal rate aids in shedding the outer layer of dull and pigmented skin cells, paving the way for the emergence of newer, healthier skin cells.
Consequently, the complexion undergoes a positive transformation, revealing a more vibrant and radiant appearance with improvements in overall skin tone and texture.

Dealing with Spots
The magic lies in retinol’s capacity to normalize keratinization, a crucial process that regulates the shedding of dead skin cells. By promoting healthy keratinisation, retinols prevent the accumulation of dead skin cells, preventing the risk of pores becoming clogged.
This, in turn, significantly diminishes the likelihood of developing troublesome spots, resulting in clearer and smoother skin.
However, the benefits extend beyond surface-level improvements. Retinols also play a pivotal role in regulating sebum production, the skin’s natural oil.
Through the reduction of excessive sebum, retinols contribute to maintaining clean pores that are less susceptible to congestion. This not only prevents the formation of new acne but also fosters a healthier and more balanced complexion.
The enhanced skin cell turnover instigated by retinols also assists in minimizing the appearance of acne scars. As new skin cells replace the old ones, the overall texture of the skin improves, and blemishes gradually become less noticeable over time.
Enhance Skin Texture and Large Pores
Retinols contribute to a more polished skin texture by diminishing roughness and smoothing out imperfections. Additionally, retinols increase the thickness of the epidermis skin layer and compact the outermost layer, known as the stratum corneum.
Notably, they also minimize the size of open pores, causing them to be virtually invisible, although they still exist—just discreetly tucked away!

Photo-ageing and Sun Damage
Retinols prove highly effective in addressing the consequences of photo-aging and sun damage. Prolonged exposure to the sun can result in various skin issues, including sunspots, uneven pigmentation, and alterations in skin texture, collectively referred to as photo-aging.
Retinols actively diminish the appearance of sunspots and uneven pigmentation by encouraging a more uniform distribution of melanin in the skin. Furthermore, retinols stimulate skin cell turnover, aiding in the gradual fading of existing sunspots and revealing a revitalized and even complexion.
Recent research also indicates that retinols may proactively reduce some of the damage caused by UV exposure, providing an additional layer of protection against the detrimental effects of sun-induced skin ageing.

Overall Skin Health
Retinols possess antioxidant properties that contribute to shielding the skin from free radicals, known as contributors to premature ageing. By neutralizing these detrimental molecules, retinols play an important role in preserving the skin’s health.
How Long Does it Take to See Results with Retinol: What Affects This?
Before delving into the timeline of this, I just wanted to mention a bit about the variables that will affect this. Also, with so many different ways the results timeline can be affected, it’s easy to feel deflated and assume the retinol is not working. Have a look at this post which should reassure you that it is!
The Type Of Retinol Used
Firstly, this information is based on the evidence we have for the use of Retinoic Acid, aka prescription strength retinol.
Currently, there isn’t enough evidence to give a definite timeline for retinol and retinaldehyde products yet, however, if that is what you are using it may – most likely will – take a bit longer to get to each stage.
You could have a read of this post here that gives you an outline of how long it took me to see different results in my first year of using Tretinoin.
Bear in mind that there is also a difference in the length of time it takes to get to each stage in the realm of over-the-counter retinol products – there is a gradient of strength, and if you are using the weaker forms, the longer it will take.
Probably the most important sentence you could read in this entire post is this: if you are new to starting retinol, you must start on the lower-strength retinol to avoid the side effects, no matter how impatient you are to get the desired results. The idea is you start low and build up the strength gradually as your skin learns to tolerate it.

Frequency Of Use
Similar to the strength of retinol used, the frequency you use the retinol has an impact on how long it takes to see results with retinol. Beginning with a lower frequency will prevent the chance of side effects, but unfortunately, means it takes longer to get the desired results.
Again, like the strength of retinol, you can gradually increase the frequency as your skin gets acclimatised to it.
Genetics
Good old genes! They always manage to put their oar in somewhere, don’t they!! As mentioned earlier, retinol converts in our skin to retinoic acid, the cell-communicating part of the ingredient. Weirdly, some of us have skin that converts it quicker than others – they will see results sooner.
Skin Type
Different skin types respond uniquely to retinol. Oily skin, characterized by increased sebum production, may adapt more quickly to retinol.
Conversely, sensitive or dry skin types may require a more cautious approach, starting with lower concentrations and less frequent use to prevent excessive dryness and irritation.
Skincare Routine
Your overall skincare routine can impact the effectiveness of retinol and the speed it takes to get results.
Incorporating complementary products, such as niacinamide, helps manage potential dryness associated with retinol use, meaning you may be able to increase the strength and frequency sooner.
On the other hand, using a moisturiser can act as a buffer to retinol slowing the absorption down (but a good way to avoid irritation!)

Pre-Existing Skin Conditions
Individuals with pre-existing skin conditions, such as acne or rosacea, may experience a longer timeline for visible results with retinol. Retinol addresses multiple skin concerns, and improvements in conditions like acne may take time.
It’s essential to be patient and consistent with retinol use, especially when dealing with specific skin conditions that may require targeted and prolonged treatment.
Age
Younger individuals typically have a higher cell turnover rate, allowing for faster renewal of the skin’s surface. As a result, they may see improvements more quickly, especially in terms of texture and radiance.
Older individuals, especially those with more advanced signs of ageing, may require more time for retinol to stimulate collagen production and visibly reduce wrinkles.
Sun Protection
Sun protection is a critical aspect of retinol use. Exposure to sunlight can diminish the effectiveness of retinol and increase the risk of irritation. Regular use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is essential to protect the skin from harmful UV rays.
Incorporating sun protection into the daily skincare routine not only preserves the benefits of retinol but also promotes overall skin health and helps prevent further damage.

Overall Skin Health
Factors such as hydration, nutrition, and general skin health play a significant role in the effectiveness of retinol. Well-hydrated and nourished skin is more receptive to skincare ingredients, allowing retinol to work more effectively, and therefore quicker.
If all these benefits have you sold on the idea, if you haven’t already started, then head over to this post here which goes through how to use retinol. It really is an amazing ingredient – a quick google of retinol before and after will show you that!
How Long Does it Take To See Results With Retinol For Wrinkles?
Well firstly, retinol gets to work on your skin cells right away. Retinol is a cell-communicating ingredient, which means it gives information to the cell on how to perform its job correctly, and it gets on with this role straight away.
Obviously, this is meaningless for us as this is all at the cellular level, so how long does it take to see results with retinol for us to notice? When will it actually reduce fine lines?

2-6 weeks
In these early days don’t expect much change to occur, no matter what reason, or reasons, you are using retinol for.
Unfortunately, if you do experience any change, it will be of the negative sort! During this phase, you may encounter temporary adverse effects, which vary based on the specific retinol product you’re using. For instance, prescription retinoids often lead to skin peeling or irritation.
Additionally, you might experience a temporary spot breakout known as “purging,” resulting from the retinol eliminating impurities from the skin. It’s crucial to note that this differs from typical breakouts and is typically short-lived.
It’s worth mentioning that purging and irritation are entirely normal, but if this is something that scares you, you can reduce the strength and/or frequency right down. Of course, that does mean a lot longer wait to see any positive changes – annoyingly it’s one or the other!
If you would like a good recommendation of a retinol to use that helps massively with avoiding any retinol side effects, I would recommend the Crystal Retinal range by Medik8.
The Crystal Retinal 3 is a particularly good one to start with unless you have particularly sensitive skin, in which case the Crystal Retinal 1 would be best.
I have a review post of this product you can find here

16 weeks
Many people use retinoids to reduce wrinkles and fine lines. However, seeing results for this takes time since it takes approximately 16 weeks of consistent use for retinoids to significantly increase collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin.
After about 4 months of regular use, you may start to notice subtle improvements in very fine wrinkles and lines.
6 Months
For more noticeable wrinkles, at least six months of consistent retinoid use is required before you may start to see subtle improvements.
It’s about this time when retinoids start significantly increasing deeper collagen, which corresponds to potential subtle improvements in deeper wrinkles as well as less acne scarring. These tend to become less indented and more level.
Do not expect a complete elimination of deep furrows or prominent wrinkles. Topical retinoids cannot erase established wrinkles or scars but may softly diminish their appearance over an extended period of consistent use.
Retinol is a great ingredient, but it doesn’t turn the clock back 30 years or so!
6-12 months
The good news is that these effects keep building with consistent use over time, so don’t stop using it! If improvements plateau after a year, maybe then is the time to get a stronger retinol?
How Long Does It Take To See Results With Retinol For Acne?
12 weeks
I’m starting this section off at 12 weeks, really to manage expectations.
If you are using retinol for acne it is likely you will experience retinol purging in the early days. As I said earlier, you can expect this to clear up around the 6-week point, so there is a chance you might see some improvements in acne from around 6 weeks, but it is more likely 12 weeks.
Consider anything earlier than 12 weeks a bonus!
6 months
By 6 months you will be pleased to know the acne struggle will be over and fully under control.

How Long Does It Take To See Results With Retinol for Skin Texture and Large Pores?
4 weeks
By accelerating regeneration, retinoids improve overall skin thickness and clear out those “plugs” that are inside pores that can expand their appearance.
These clogs, known as comedones, get removed more frequently with faster shedding of the surface skin layers induced by retinoids. So they help shrink enlarged-looking pores by preventing pore-clogging buildup.
A study investigated the impact of daily application of retinol or tretinoin on photo-aged skin over a three-month period. Dermatologists observed a significant reduction in pore size for participants after the initial 28 days of treatment.
The good news with this study is not just that we’ll see an improvement in a relatively short 4 weeks, but also that the study only used 0.2% retinol – which is generally quite a low-strength retinol.
4-6 weeks
Ideally, by this stage, any purging and irritation have subsided, allowing you to experience the improved texture by simply running your fingers across your skin.
This smoothing effect arises from the retinoids compacting, evening out, and smoothing the top layer of the skin known as the stratum corneum.
6 months
At this point, your skin texture and open pores will show a marked difference. Skin will be much smoother and you won’t notice any open pores.
How Long Does It Take For Retinol To Work for Hyperpigmentation?
8-16 weeks
You’ll see some changes in any hyperpigmentation you may have at this time. The changes you’ll see, however, do depend on the type of hyperpigmentation you have
- If it’s in the deeper layers of the skin it may become more noticeable initially due to that stratum corneum layer becoming more even and smoother.
- If the hyperpigmentation is in the higher layers of the skin, you will start to see them fade
6 months
Blemishes, scars and hyperpigmentation will have faded and be a lot less prominent by 6 months

We all slather creams and concoctions on our ever-ageing skin, searching for that magic elixir to regain the supple smoothness of days past while eliminating those inevitable signs of time that creep up our necks.
We want what these skin care companies promise but become impatient when two weeks pass without a decade melting from our faces.
How long does it take to see results with retinol? Well, hopefully from this post, you can see that 2 weeks just isn’t going to cut it. You are playing a long game with retinol. If you’re considering throwing in the towel, just check the calendar to see how long it’s been since you started
Just like my new sofa, your new face will totally be worth the wait…..and unlike my new sofa, it won’t get ruined within months by kids and pets!!
